Nostalgia is the sentimental memory from the past associated with
happiness. That is the definition found in the dictionary. My personal definition of nostalgia is very
different. Nostalgia means not being
able to let go of the past. How many times have we revisited a movie or cartoon
from our childhood only to discover it was not good? The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise is
one of the latest cartoons from the 80s and early 90s rebranded for a new generation
With any reboot, relaunch, rebrand, repackaging there is always a loud cry from
long time fans. They complain that the cartoon cannot be touched and should remain in its original form. It is time to grow up and embrace the
incarnation of your favorite franchise. In addition, it makes perfect business
sense to recapitalize on the success from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
In the early 90’s turtle mania swept the nation. The movie franchise spawn three films, which
have grossed over $300
million, combined. The animated
television series ran for ten seasons. The franchise also launched tons of
merchandise including clothes, toys, video games and VHS videos. With all the
success of the turtles why don't the original fans want see the turtles
reintroduced to a new generation of fans?
Nostalgia is dangerous because it pushes against change. Even if the
change will improve the product. Like it
or not the turtles are back and they are even better than before.
When Viacom’s Nickelodeon announced
that it would acquire the intellectual property for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in 2009 fans of the franchised feared
the worst. Viacom acquired the franchise
for $60
million that includes all previous partnerships with merchandise, film and television. Fast-forward to 2012 and the turtles are back
and better than ever. The show is now
completely animated with CGI and features the new leaner and meaner turtle
designs. Well-developed stories and new character redesigns now add more depth
to the franchise. The heart and souls of the turtles remind untouched as all
four brothers still retain their unique personalities. The show is now in its
second season on Nickelodeon with a third
season in the works. Nickelodeon
has recreated the turtles for new generations of fans and at the same time
stayed true to the franchise’s heritage.
The rebirth of the turtles brings together fans of the old series and
the new fans for a new era of turtle power
